1 killed in crash involving semitruck on I-70 in Madison County

All lanes of eastbound I-70 and the ramp from I-55 southbound closed while officers continued to investigate.

TROY, Ill. — A deadly crash early Friday morning on Interstate 70 in Troy, Illinois, left the interstate closed in one direction for several hours.

According to Illinois State Police, the incident happened at about 3:20 a.m. Friday on eastbound I-70 near Old Staunton Road. For unknown reasons, a Volkswagen Jetta left the roadway and struck the guardrail, becoming disabled in the left lane. A semitruck, also traveling in the left lane, was unable to avoid the vehicle and crashed into it.

The driver of the Volkswagen was taken to the hospital, where they later died, according to ISP.

The ramp from southbound I-55 to eastbound I-70 and all lanes of eastbound I-70 between I-55 and State Route 4 were closed as officers continued to investigate. The Illinois Department of Transportation anticipated the closure to last until 9 a.m.
