Pedestrian killed, another injured Wednesday night in Phelps County crash

A 31-year-old was killed and a juvenile was hospitalized after being struck at the intersection of North Jefferson Street and Highway B.

ST JAMES, Mo. — A pedestrian was killed and another was hospitalized after being struck while crossing the highway in St. James.

According to a post from the St. James Police Department, a 31-year-old woman and a juvenile were crossing the roadway at about 9 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of North Jefferson Street and State Highway B, located just off of Interstate 44. Police did not share the exact age of the juvenile.

Police said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts from first responders, and the juvenile was airlifted to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

St. James police and the Phelps County Coroner's Office were investigating the crash. They did not say whether the crash was a hit-and-run or if the driver stayed at the scene of the incident.

As of Thursday morning, police had not released the identity of the woman killed.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this heartbreaking event," the post from the department said. "We ask that the community respect their privacy during this difficult time."
