ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. — Several animals were rescued from rising waters Tuesday as St. Clair County Animal Services in Belleville was flooded.
A Facebook live posted by Gateway Pet Guardians showed people carrying dogs through high water onto dry ground and loading them into crates to take back to their shelter.
Gateway Pet Guardians is asking for donations and fosters as they take on the influx of pets. They said there are several ways to give support:
You can support Gateway Pet Guardians by:
- Making monetary donations at gatewaypets.org/donate or through Venmo gatewaypets
- Donations such as L/XL crates, leashes, martingale collars, treats and dog toys. They can be brought to the shelter or shipped to Gateway Pet Guardians, 725 N 15th St., East St. Louis, IL 62205.
- Fostering a 40+ lb adult dog for at least 1-2 weeks. Potential fosters can visit the facility before 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The Belleville Area Humane Society said the cats were evacuated before around 40 dogs were rescued from the building, and all animals made it out safely. In addition, the humane society rescued a stray dog that was drowning in a creek and another that was running on Highway 15.
The humane society also reported damage to their building and asked fosters to connect with Gateway Pet Guardians.
