ST. LOUIS — A man died Friday night in the pool at the West End Terrace Apartments in St. Louis, police said.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call around 9:30 p.m. about a man in distress in a pool at the apartments on the 4300 block of Greenwich Lane.

When police and paramedics arrived the man was unresponsive and taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police learned from witnesses that a 23-year-old man was walking in the shallow end of the pool when he dropped off into the deep end.

Witnesses told police they didn't know how to swim and neither did the man who drowned.
