EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — The Edwardsville school district is looking into a ‘racially insensitive and inappropriate social media post’ that spread throughout the high school community Tuesday.
The post was sent off campus by an Edwardsville High School student to several others on Snapchat, Edwardsville Community District 7 Schools Superintendent Jason Henderson said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.
‘Many in our education community were rightfully and justifiably offended by the post,” Henderson said, adding that the post led to what he described as a disruption at the high school.
School administration and staff addressed the post throughout the school day Tuesday and worked to manage the disruption, Henderson said.
After school was dismissed for the day, high school administrators became aware of rumors about potential safety threats to Edwardsville High School. The school worked with police, who determined there was no credible threat to the high school or any school in the district.
Due to confidentiality of student information, school officials are not releasing the names of the students involved or any details about the contents of the post. The students are being addressed through the school board’s student discipline policy.
Henderson said the school district is now working to develop ways to educate students on racism and its potential effects, including possibly forming an Equity Task Force.
