ST. LOUIS - The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis was envisioned and built, as Archbishop John Kain said, "more handsome and more worthy...of the great Catholic city of the west."
The Romanesque superstructure was constructed from 1907-1914, while the Byzantine & Italian-style mosaics took almost another 75 years to design and install. The Cathedral Basilica houses one of the largest collections of mosaics in the Western Hemisphere covering 83,000 square feet containing 41.5 million pieces of glass tesserae which enhance the understanding of the catholic faith.
The 100th anniversary of the superstructure was celebrated in 2014 and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis remains a special place of worship. Masses are offered every day of the week and tours are available either as self-guided, or docent-led.
