Ammunition was ignited during a garage fire in Lake Saint Louis Friday.

LAKE SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Explosions were heard after a large one-story Lake Saint Louis house caught fire April 18.

Wentzville Fire Chief Michael Marlo says firefighters were called to a garage fire on Pelican Court around 4 p.m.

He says firefighters were able to knock down the fire before it spread to the rest of the house, but something exploded in the garage while crews fought the fire. The garage is a total loss and three cars in the garage are destroyed. There is extensive heat and smoke damage to the rest of the home.

Officials initially believed the explosions were from ammunition, but Marlo says the sounds may have been from aerosol paint cans that burst.

Marlo says some fire hydrants in the area were not working and it took firefighters a while to find enough working hydrants to have an adequate water supply.

There's no word yet on the cause of the fire or why some of the hydrants were not working.
