Fire at MU medical school leaves 2 injured

​There were reports of an explosion, but fire officials haven't confirmed whether an explosion occurred.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Two people were injured Friday afternoon after a fire at the University of Missouri School of Medicine

The fire happened shortly after noon Friday on the seventh floor of the Medical Sciences Building in a laboratory space that was not being used, according to MU Health Care spokesperson Eric Slusher.

Firefighters from the Columbia Fire Department responded and quickly extinguished the fire. Several firefighters were seen entering the building wearing hazmat suits.

Two people were taken to MU Health Care's emergency department with minor injuries, Slusher said. They have since been released.

The fire department was investigating the source of the incident. Fire officials did not confirm whether an explosion occurred.

Hospital operations and patient care at University Hospital have since returned to normal, Slusher said.
