1 dead, 3 injured after crash involving stolen Hyundai in St. Louis

Investigation revealed the Hyundai had been stolen out of St. Louis on Tuesday.

ST. LOUIS — A man is dead after a stolen Hyundai crashed into his car Friday afternoon in south St. Louis.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the crash happened at 12:37 p.m. near the intersection of South Broadway and River City Casino Boulevard.

St. Louis police said early investigations show that a St. Louis County police officer attempted to stop a 2019 Hyundai traveling northbound on South Broadway when the Hyundai fled into St. Louis city limits. The officer did not pursue the vehicle, police said.

After fleeing, the Hyundai struck the left side of a Chevrolet Camero that was traveling westbound on River City Casino at the intersection. The Hyundai then struck a Ford Fiesta that was stopped in the left-turn lane of South Broadway, preparing to turn eastbound onto River City Casino.

Investigation revealed the Hyundai had been stolen out of St. Louis on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Police said the man driving the Camaro was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Police on Feb. 3 identified him as 53-year-old Jimmy Mitchell of O'Fallon, Missouri.

Three of the four occupants in the Hyundai were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said Saturday that the driver was an 18-year-old woman and the two passengers were a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl. A fourth person from the Hyundai fled the scene on foot, police said.

The driver of the Fiesta refused medical attention at the scene, police said.

St. Louis police did not release any additional information about the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
