JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. — A man died and his mother was hospitalized Monday evening after a house fire in rural St. Francois County.
The fire started shortly after 5 p.m. on the 8700 block of Hillsboro Road in the unincorporated community of Valles Mines.
A woman lived at the home with her son, who is paralyzed and couldn't make it out of the home, according to Big River Fire Protection District officials. The man died, and first responders were still working to recover his body.
The woman was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Officials did not have further details on her condition.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal but is not believed to be suspicious.
