The FBI is warning citizens of a phone scam that is displaying an FBI phone number on caller ID.
The FBI says it has received multiple calls reporting the scam in which a caller claiming to represent the US Government or claiming to be FBI agents. The bureau says the caller tells the people on the other line that they have delinquent student loans or dues, delinquent taxes or overdue parking tickets and demand immedate payment.
The FBI says the originating telephone number used by the scammer is displayed or “spoofed” as that of the telephone number of an FBI field office.
They want to remind people that they never call private citizens asking for money. They also say to never give out unsolicited requests for personal information.
