FERGUSON, Mo. — This month marks 10 years since the death of Michael Brown Jr. in the city of Ferguson, and the protests and civil unrest that followed.
In that time, Ferguson has undergone some significant changes. A Business Journal analysis of demographic and economic data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows a "mixed narrative," according to Saint Louis University sociologist Ness Sandoval.
Population loss
From 2014 to 2022, the latest year of data available from the U.S. Census Bureau, the city's population declined 12.3%, to 18,546 from 21,151.
Ferguson's white population declined by 37%, to 4,207, and its Black population declined by 4%, to 13,292. In 2022, as in 2014, Ferguson's Black population far outnumbers its white population.
Income gains
Ferguson's median household income was $47,410 in 2022, a 17% increase over 2014's $40,660.
The increase, though notable, did not compare well with surrounding cities.
