ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis skyline will look a little different throughout the month of September as the Gateway Arch's lights will be turned off.

The National Park Service will turn off the exterior lights at the Gateway Arch at night throughout September to protect birds migrating south for the winter.

According to the National Park Service, the Mississippi River is used as a corridor during the spring and fall for bird migration for about 40% of the nation's migratory waterfowl.

The Gateway Arch has turned off its exterior lights during high-intensity migration months since 2002.

The exterior lights will be turned off beginning Sunday, Sept. 1, and will be turned back every night starting Tuesday, Oct. 1.
