EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — Gateway Pet Guardians is expanding its open adoption hours and lowering adoption fees for June as it heads into the summer's first heatwave with already
The East St. Louis shelter said it currently is "bursting at the seams" with 70 dogs and cats. It said that during heatwaves, intakes tend to increase.
“The shelter is filling up again and now we have almost 70 dogs and cats at the shelter on any given day, which is well above our capacity,” director of operations Jill Henke said in a news release. “We are temporarily holding dogs and cats in pop-up crates in offices and meeting rooms until we can find a foster or adopter.”
To help make room and incentivize adoptions, the shelter is reducing adoption fees through June. Adult dog adoptions are $100 off and adult cat, puppy and kitten adoptions are reduced by 30-50%.
Walk-in adoption and foster hours do not require an appointment through June.
The shelter is also looking for potential fosters.
“We are providing intake vetting as fast as possible so that our dogs and cats are ready for adoption and foster homes. All you need to do is email our placement team or walk in during the open hours to help us end pet homelessness in the East Side Pet District!” adoption and foster manager Amanda Loellke said.
Here are Gateway Pet Guardians' adjusted adoption/foster hours and fees for June:
- Tuesday – Friday, 2-6 p.m.
