ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — St. Louis County Executive Sam Page talked about the death of George Floyd at Friday's COVID-19 briefing.
Page was asked if there are plans in place as there are protests across the country amid the death of George Floyd.
“First of all, I think we have to recognize that our police officers have a duty to keep us safe and sometimes that can be difficult – we expect them to have the proper judgment and discipline to make good decisions and we are obligated to provide them with the training so they’ll be able to react to any situation,” Page said.
He said that the video of Floyd’s death was horrifying.
“Watching that video was horrifying for everyone who saw it,” Page said.
He also noted that the county will support people who want to protest peacefully.
Missouri Governor Mike Parson joined Page for his briefing.
On Thursday, Gov. Parson extended Phase 1 of Missouri’s reopening plan. It will now continue through June 15, which falls in line with the state's executive orders and state of emergency, which are set to end the same day.
Gov. Parson and Page discussed economic recovery plans and the COVID-19 testing efforts for long term care facilities.
“I believe that our response here in St. Louis County, our focus on seniors in nursing homes, has saved lives. It was quick and alert reaction from our public health department. And it is really a testament to the work, the good work that they do every day for public health, for the residents of St. Louis County. I'm glad that Governor Parson is here to join us today,” Page said.
Gov. Parson thanked Page for the job he’s been doing during the pandemic.
“It’s been tough up here, to say the least,” Parson said.
Gov. Parson said that one of the goals is trying to get tests for everyone that wants one. The importance of testing has been something that Page has stressed since the beginning of the pandemic. On Wednesday, he said the goal is to get at least 1,000 tests per day.
Gov. Parson also visited with the St. Louis Clergy following the briefing to help distribute masks purchased by state and local government to area churches.
As the COVID-19 crisis continues, Page will hold briefings at 8:30 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
