ST. LOUIS — Great Rivers Greenway was awarded nearly $10 million for a bridge to connect its Brickline Greenway project which aims to bring multiple parts of the city together.
The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $9.9 million grant to build a bridge in Midtown to connect the four directions of the Brickline Greenway. The bridge will go above the eastbound lanes and below the westbound lanes of I-64/40, according to a press release announcing the grant.
The Brickline Greenway is a project to connect up to 14 neighborhoods in the City of St. Louis. Extend from Forest Park to the Gateway Arch and Fairground Park to Tower Grove Park. The bridge that was awarded the federal grand would connect all of those routes and allow residents to travel along all four directions of the path.
“This greenway bridge will be the hub where the north, south, east and west Brickline Greenway routes come together,” said Susan Trautman, Chief Executive Officer for Great Rivers Greenway. “Creating access for everyone and leveraging local tax dollars, private philanthropy with federal dollars is a win for all.”
Construction will align with the scheduled reconstruction of the eastbound I-64 bridge over Vandeventer Avenue in 2027-28 to minimize traffic impact.
The federal grant matches local funds that have already been committed to the project. The local funds come from the City of St. Louis, private developments and the Missouri Department of Transportation.
