ST. LOUS — High school students pulled together to raise thousands of dollars for a fellow student, a freshman fighting brain cancer.
In just a few days, Bishop DuBourg High School raised more than $2,000 by selling customized t-shirts. They're inspired by 14-year-old Brett Haubrich.
Hundreds of students from all grade levels wore those t-shirts to school Friday. They read 'Do it for Brett' and "Tackle Cancer.'
"When a student like Brett has something like this going on, everyone really feels it and everyone really wants to do something," said Allison Bettlach, a senior at DuBourg High School.
Brett's classmates said they wanted to do something to help. Their friend has been battling an inoperable brain tumor for three years. Brett has gone through radiation, chemotherapy and three laser surgeries, but his tumor continues to grow.
"But, he's very brave," said Brett's younger sister, Ella Haubrich.
It is Brett's bravery and resilience that inspired this movement and the hashtag #teambrett.
"I was so excited," said Brett.
In a matter of one week, the group of students and staff sold hundreds of one-of-a-kind t-shirts. All the proceeds go toward Brett and his family.
"You learn how much people love you and how much people support you and how much people empathize with your situation," said Brett's mom, Eileen Haubrich.
So, at the end of the week, everyone came to school wearing their shirts and surrounded their classmate with love and encouragement.
"Brett has changed all of our lives in one way or another," said Bettlach. "Some of us know him better than others, but everyone at DuBourg feels personally impacted by Brett," she said.
Brett is taking part in Phase II clinical trial at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago. His family is hoping this trial will help slow the growth of the tumor.
