Highland community comes together to rally around 8th grader in the hospital following crash

Brayden Baer, 14, was involved in a severe car crash Thursday morning and remains in critical condition.

HIGHLAND, Ill. — Multiple fundraisers are underway to support an all-star athlete in Madison County.

Brayden Baer, 14, was involved in a severe car crash Thursday morning and remains in critical condition.

Baer is an 8th grader at Highland Middle School.

5 On Your Side learned he was on the way to school when another car T-boned him.

Since then, there's been a wave of support for the 8th grader and his family, including a candlelight vigil Sunday night.

On Monday morning, skaters inside New Douglas Township Park and Rec Plex rode for a reason. A donation bucket collected funds for the family.

There are also two T-shirt drives happening.

Compustitch and Trendy Tees have set up shirt fundraisers.

The GoFundMe created for the family has already surpassed $30,000 in just three days.

A basketball practice fundraiser is taking place Monday evening to support, as well.

Bill Logsdon, Highland Middle's basketball coach, called Baer an absolute "phenom" in basketball and football.

"We just want the family know that we're here. We love them. We love Brayden. He can do it all in any sport he plays but he’s a great kid, honor roll student, great friend to everyone at the school. He’s just a pillar of our little community of the students in his class," Logsdon shared.

Baer's principal said he is a friend to all.

"Brady is a fantastic human being, he never has a mean word to say to anyone," Liz Weder said. "He is a quiet leader. Highland is just an amazing community that supports their own whenever they are in need and we are here to fight alongside them."

There is a GoFundMe account to support the Baer family here.
