Woman killed Thursday afternoon in Alton house fire

The Madison County coroner identified the victim on Friday.

ALTON, Illinois — The Alton Police Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshal are investigating after one person was found dead Thursday afternoon after a house fire.

Alton Fire Department Deputy Chief Matthew Fischer said shortly after 1:30 p.m., the department responded to a house fire on the 2700 block of Grandview Avenue. 

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found a heavy fire at the front of the home. Fire crews then entered the home and found one victim dead. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Madison County coroner identified the victim as 56-year-old Tina M. Price.

According to a press release, Price called 911 to report her house was on fire and was overwhelmed by the smoke. An autopsy found that she died due to smoke inhalation, the release said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
