ST. LOUIS — Fifteen dogs will receive treatment in St. Louis starting Tuesday after they were rescued from a property in Polk County, Missouri.
According to a press release, the Humane Society of Missouri's Animal Cruelty Task Force rescued the dogs Tuesday morning after a concerned neighbor called to report their concerns. The press release said police found the property owner dead during a welfare check last week, and several dogs loose on the property with no food or water.
The Polk County Sheriff contacted the Humane Society to get help with the dogs.
The press release said the dogs were malnourished and experiencing a wide range of health issues. They also found the remains of several dogs on the property.
“We are so appreciative of the Polk County Sheriff and their assistance in helping us rescue these animals before winter sets in," Humane Society of Missouri President Kathy Warnick said. "The dogs are receiving the care and love they deserve, and we are grateful to the HSMO community for their support and generosity in helping give them their second chance.”
The dogs are being taken back to the Humane Society facility in St. Louis, where they will receive treatment. A court date was set for Dec. 9 to determine if the Humane Society will be awarded custody of the dogs. If they are awarded custody, the dogs could be adopted out once they are given a clean bill of health and evaluated by the behavior team.
