ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. — A child and adult were hurt in a crash that closed down Illinois Route 3 for several hours this Friday afternoon in St. Clair County.
A car and semi-truck crashed in Brooklyn, IL near Canal Street and the McKinley Bridge. The child and adult were airlifted from the scene.
5 On Your Side is still waiting to learn more about the extent of their injuries; however, some people said these sort of gruesome crashes have been taking place for years.
"Looks like the car, it went around this Dead Man's Curve," Mattie Roby said, who witnessed the crash scene. "They call it Dead Man Curve."
Roby has lived in Brooklyn for 29 years. Seeing the crash on Route 3 near Canal Street Friday afternoon, she said it's been an extremely problematic spot in the past, though this may have been one of the worst Roby remembers.
"Whoever is involved, I hope they be alright because this is really sad," Roby said.
Brooklyn Fire Protection District and Brooklyn Police responded to the crash around 2:30 p.m., July 19.
"For them to have two helicopters, the accident was really bad," Roby said at the scene. "I think it was really bad."
A commercial truck driver who did not want to go on-camera said he'd been at work since 4:00 a.m. and this was the fastest way home. He was forced to turn around like everyone else.
Driver Marvin Strode said it was worth it to wait even an hour rather than going around to try to make his way home.
"Gas has gone up again, I've got more patience then I've got money," Strode said. "So I'll wait."
Strode has lived in Washington Park for about 40 years, echoing the dangers of this popular road.
"A man and his dog, they were on a motorcycle, they got killed coming from around this curve," Strode said. "Some girls going out to a party at night for a birthday party, they got killed here too. Each one got killed on each side of the street."
Illinois State Police are handling the investigation.
They did not release any additional information regarding the crash or the severity of the child and adult's injuries.
