FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. — After more than 30 years serving Fairview Heights, Police Chief Nick Gailius said he will retire in early July.
A press release said Gailius started with the Fairview Heights Police Department as a volunteer police explorer at the age of 14. He was hired as a police dispatcher in 1986 and worked his way up the force. In 2010, he became police chief.
Gailius won numerous awards in his law enforcement career including the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police as Police Chief of the Year in 2017.
“It has been an honor leading one of the premier police departments in the Metro East," he said in a press release. "I will always love policing and serving others and the community. Fairview Heights PD has been a big part of my life for 37 years."
Fairview Heights Mayor Mark Kupsky said the Board of Police and Fire Commission will begin the process to select a new chief in early July.
