Large grocery store fire burning in Metro East could be seen from downtown

The grocery store owner told 5 On Your Side he got the call at about 5 a.m. that the fire alarm was going off in the store.

WASHINGTON PARK, Ill. — Firefighters from several area departments responded to a large fire in the Metro East early Monday morning.

A huge plume of smoke could be seen from downtown St. Louis coming from the Shopwise grocery store on Caseyville Avenue in Washington Park.

The grocery store owner told 5 On Your Side he got the call at about 5 a.m. that the fire alarm was going off in the store. He said the business has been serving the community for about 10 years.

Washington Park fire officials do not yet know how the fire started.

Neighbors said they are sad to see their local grocery store be destroyed by flames, but they're happy firefighters were able to contain the damage and keep it to spreading to nearby homes.

Several fire departments responded to help, including Cahokia, Camp Jackson, Brooklyn, East St. Louis and State Park.

Officials haven’t released any further details at this time.
