Montgomery County solar dispute takes another twist after contractor arrested

“When I walked out my back gate to get my mail there was a man standing outside urinating, fully exposed,” said Joey Kelly.

HILLSBORO, Ill. — What was supposed to be a small solar project at a Hillsboro, Illinois, home is continuing to cause quite a stir in the community.

Joey Kelly admits when she woke up Monday morning she was tired of seeing metal posts where solar panels were supposed to go in her yard

“When I walked out my back gate to get my mail there was a man standing outside urinating, fully exposed,” said Joey Kelly.

Since she didn’t know the man, and he was going to her garage, she called the cops.

Kelly was unaware that the man was a contractor sent to pull the posts out of her yard.

“The next thing I know he’s actually trying to come in my gate,” said Joey Kelly. “While I’m on the phone with the police I’m yelling, 'don’t you dare come in this gate.' Got inside and locked the door.”

Hillsboro police quickly got to the Kelly home and arrested the contractor, a 34-year-old man, for disorderly conduct.

“We’ve been in situations where when you’ve got to go you’ve got to go,” said Adam Kelly. “I know that, firsthand, but there’s a way of going about doing it.”

“They said that the man was uncooperative and extremely intoxicated,” said Joey Kelly.

Now the Kelly’s are trying to clean up another mess in their yard.

“Even now I don’t know if they’re going to if they’re going to come after us for the money,” said Joey Kelly.

Already out $10,000 for their failed solar project the Kellys admit this situation has taught them an expensive lesson.

“If you’re going to go solar really do your research on it,” said Adam Kelly. “Try to find a reputable company that’s not going to subcontract.”

“I’ll never, ever deal with anything like this again,” said Joey Kelly.
