Kirkwood, Mo. resident Howard Mayes was crossing the finish line at the 2013 Boston Marathon when the first bomb went off.

Mayes, who was running in a fluorescent green shirt, became part of the story last year as video of the attack circulated. His wife, Karen, was waiting for him near the finish line, between the two bombs. She was not injured.

Nearly one week after the bombing the Boston Globe profiled Mayes and four other runners who were crossing the finish line when the bombs went off.

A year later, the Globe has posted a 23-minute documentary called "5 Runners," following up with Mayes and the four other runners with whom he is forever linked. The film features Mayes' "Howard Cam," which was strapped to his body throughout the race.

The powerful piece follows the runners' emotional healing, personal growth, and their quest to return to Boston in 2014.
