MANCHAC, La. — A Lake St. Louis man was among the eight people killed in a series of at least three "crash clusters" Monday morning on Interstate 55 in Louisiana.
James Fleming, 87, was identified Thursday by St. John Parish Coroner's Office. He was involved in a crash that involved 168 vehicles and stretched over a mile long near Manchac, Louisiana.
Six others, all from Louisana, were killed in the crash, the seventh victim has not been identified as of Thursday afternoon. Sixty-three others were injured.
Dense fog along with a marsh fire created hazardous driving conditions on Monday morning, according to WWL. "Superfog" is a combination of dense fog and smoke that contributed to the near-zero visibility along the interstate.
The Louisana Department of Transportation and Development announced that I-55 southbound reopened on Thursday morning while the northbound lanes remained closed.
