Library shutters a downtown St. Louis location

The library’s Central Express location closed permanently Aug. 16, with the lease for its 7,000-square-foot space ending at the end of August.

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Public Library has closed one of its downtown St. Louis branches, saying the decision to shutter its “mini-location” inside the Old Post Office comes as activity there has fallen since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The library’s Central Express location closed permanently Aug. 16, with the lease for its 7,000-square-foot space ending at the end of August, a spokesperson said. St. Louis Public Library in 2006 opened its Central Express location inside the Old Post Office at 815 Olive St., an original tenant of the building following its redevelopment.

St. Louis Public Library in a closure notice sent to customers said operating the Central Express branch six blocks from its Central Library, at 1301 Olive St. in Downtown West, was “no longer the best use of our resources,” citing changing customer needs. The Central Express location operated with limited services and daytime hours aimed at serving the downtown workforce.
