St. Louis families brave chilly temps for trick-or-treating

Temperatures in the low 40s created a chilly Halloween that the Bi-state hasn’t seen in a few years.

ST. LOUIS — Area families spent Tuesday night braving the colder-than-normal temperatures for Halloween.

It meant getting creative with the costumes to keep the fun alive. Temperatures in the low 40s created a chilly Halloween that the Bi-state hasn’t seen in a few years. When it comes down to the annual tradition of trick or treating, some families are saying they’ll do what they have to do for the kids.

Trick or treating started at 4 p.m. in The Grove.

"This is fake blood,” 9-year-old Gerardo said while showcasing his Ghostface costume.

His sister brought him out despite the cold weather.

"Long sleeves, sweat pants, boots, Uggs, pj's,” Juliana Gervacio said, pointing to what she was wearing as she escorted her siblings.

Whatever it takes to get in on the fun.

Over in St. Charles, outdoor fire pits greeted Halloween enthusiasts in the Cambridge Crossing neighborhood.

"This is a little cooler than we're used to but we'll brave the night,” Brad Stockstorm said.

"We did over 200 candy bags. Me and my mother filled the candy bags for the kids. That's what we used to do when I was little with my mom,” Sally Walsh added.

But her mom had to be a no-show Tuesday night.

"I'm just sorry that my mother who is 93, who would be sitting right here with the witch's hat on giving out the candy to all these kids, I'm just sorry that it's a little chilly for her," she said.

It didn't stop the kids from packing what this community calls Halloween Town. Several homes get in on the action, decorating and luring eager candy seekers.

"We don’t want to terrorize them. We don't want the kids to be scared, especially the little bitty ones, but we want them to have fun and enjoy themselves,” Stockstorm added.

Every year, Halloween Town collects donations this time of year to give back to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It's in honor of one of their Halloween-loving neighbors who died of cancer. You can find more about that fundraiser here.
