Making a Difference: Waigand Wheels is delivering produce and purpose in Kirkwood

Waigand Wheels does more than deliver goods. It is a community for more than 50 special-needs volunteers.

KIRKWOOD, Mo. — An extraordinary delivery service is forging its own path, leaving an indelible mark on the community in the heart of Kirkwood. Waigand Wheels isn't just about delivering food; it's about delivering a profound sense of hope, purpose and unity.

The voyage embarked in 2018 when Lance Waigand faced the daunting prospect of complex back surgery. Born with a rare genetic anomaly, his life was a constant battle against myriad cognitive and physical challenges. There were moments during his 24-year journey when the family feared for his life.

"So he ended up in intensive care for six weeks," Lance's father Rich Waigand said. "And there were points in time where we really did think we might lose him."

Yet, this time, Lance's family was unwaveringly determined to kindle a fresh sense of purpose within him as he recuperated.

Lance's sister and the executive director of Waigand's Wheels, Samantha Waigand, recognized a profound passion in him.

"Lance's favorite thing in the world is car rides; he literally can't get enough of them," she said. "He could spend all day in the car."

That's when they decided to make those car rides matter, birthing the idea of Waigand Wheels. Several days a week, Lance and Sam deliver not only produce but also goodwill to various destinations, including local businesses, the elderly and residential care homes.

"I wanted to make sure that we're not just another GrubHub," Samantha said. "We partner with organizations that are either non-for-profits themselves or are local mission-driven businesses."

Amplifying their purpose, Sam and Lance now receive the support of 50 special needs volunteers, affectionately known as "Wagoneers." Among these inspiring individuals are Pamela Mehra and Chase Burnside.

"I have never seen Pamela so motivated in life as she has been since she joined Wagon Wheels," Anita Mehra, Pamela's sister, said. "It's given her a whole new outlook."

Chase's mom, Jennifer Burnside said the experience has been transformative.

"He's learned that he can meet new people," she said. "He's learned that life after school is full of opportunities."

Sam Waigand's unwavering dedication to her brother has not only changed Lance's life but also sparked a sense of community.

"I'm beyond overwhelmed to see that this is something that is not just for Lance anymore; it's for the community, and it will continue on," Rich Waigand said.

Waigand's Wheels doesn't just deliver produce; it delivers a spark for an inclusive and more connected community.

Sam summed up her feelings with heartfelt gratitude.

"To be able to have a part in that has been more than I could ask for."

This is the inspiring journey of Waigand Wheels, a reminder that even from the most challenging circumstances, the power of love, dedication, and community spirit can create something truly remarkable.
