Man dies after being hit by train near downtown St. Louis

Police did not say when the train struck the man, but the statement addressing the incident was published around 2 a.m.

ST. LOUIS — A man died early Saturday morning after he was struck by a train less than half a mile from downtown St. Louis, according to a statement from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

The locomotive engineer and the train conductor told police that the conductor alerted the engineer of someone lying on the tracks. Police said the engineer sounded the horn and the man did not move. 

Although the engineer initiated an emergency stop of the train, the train did not stop before hitting the man. 

Police dispatchers sent officers with SLMPD's 4th District to Cass Avenue and N 1st Street after a man was struck by a train, the police statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, said.

"That person has died," the statement said. "Please avoid the area."

Police did not say when the train struck the man, but the statement addressing the incident was published around 2 a.m.
