Man dies after crash into bridge pier, car fire in St. Louis

The driver was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by EMS workers, police said.

ST. LOUIS — A man died Thursday morning after he crashed his car into a bridge leading to a car fire.

St. Louis police said the crash happened in the 500 block of South Vandeventer Avenue at around 4:45 a.m. When officers arrived, they found a white Jeep Wrangler that had caught fire after crashing into the pier of a railroad bridge.

The driver was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by EMS workers. Police said investigators do not yet know why the car crashed into the pier.

The man was identified on Aug. 27 as 49-year-old William Cowley.

The department's Accident Reconstruction team is handling the investigation.

The police department said it would provide the driver's identity once it is available.
