St. Louis man fatally shot woman after struggle over gun, court records say

The shooting happened at a Jennings liquor store on Jan. 15, after the suspect and the victim struggled over a firearm in a gun sale gone bad.

JENNINGS, Mo. — The suspect who police say fatally shot a woman at a Jennings liquor store in January now faces murder charges.

A resident of the north St. Louis's O'Fallon neighborhood, 20-year-old Devin Macon, was charged Thursday with second-degree murder and stealing a firearm, a statement from the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said.

Macon's bond was set at $750,000 — cash only.

Court records say Macon and the victim, 25-year-old Keila Buckner, had previously agreed to exchange guns for cash.

On the day of the shooting, Jan. 15, Macon picked up the victim and drove to New York Market, a liquor store in the 8700 block of Jennings Station Road, according to charging documents.

The statement said that video surveillance shows the suspect followed the victim into the store. In the store, they both stood close to one another, both holding firearms and speaking to one another.

The suspect began handing cash to the victim while also reaching for and grabbing her firearm, the statement said.

"They start struggling over [the] victim’s firearm, and the victim’s firearm discharges, hitting the ground," the statement said. "The suspect] then fires his own gun, hitting the victim in the spine."

The suspect grabbed the victim's gun, ran out of the store, and drove away.

Officers with the St. Louis County Police Department responded to the scene and found the victim. She was taken to a hospital for treatment, but she died.

Macon was later arrested after a SWAT raid.
