Hundreds of Facebook complaints surround massive pothole in north St. Louis roundabout

Warmer temperatures might mean the roads are less icy, but it doesn't necessarily mean a smoother ride. Potholes are causing major issues across the region.

ST. LOUIS — Warmer temperatures might mean the roads are less icy, but it doesn't necessarily mean a smoother ride. Potholes are causing major issues across the St. Louis area.

One north city pothole, in particular, has been frustrating drivers for days at the roundabout near Goodfellow Boulevard and Natural Bridge Avenue.

Driving around the roundabout meant maneuvering around a huge pothole that has been a serious hurdle for drivers, with hundreds of Facebook comments complaining about why it wasn't fixed.

One taxpayer said she's been going around the pothole for a week while trying to get to work.

Considering last week's single-digit temperatures, potholes are just one of the problems left in the aftermath. A traffic cone marking the Goodfellow pothole was since run over and cast aside Tuesday morning. Some people online complained they needed to go up on the curb to avoid it near Natural Bridge Avenue.

"That particular one isn't water related but in winter time we get potholes because you get moisture into the pavement it freezes," Curt Skouby, director of the St. Louis Department of Public Utilities and Water Commissioner, said. "It causes the pavement to pop up and it's just a winter occurrence here in St. Louis."

Winter potholes cause damage, especially to tires, which has kept customers coming to Dr. Tire just down the road from the roundabout on Goodfellow Blvd.

"Before I give them the tire I need to make sure everything is right," Motisem Altehrawi, an employee of Dr. Tire, said. "To make sure everything is good. To make sure the tire is not leaking."

There was not a clear timeline on when the pothole would be filled. However, city officials urged drivers to go slowly on the slick roads to prevent any further damage to their cars.

The City of St. Louis is asking anyone with a pothole complaint to call the Citizens' Service Bureau at 314-622-4800 along with filling out an online report by clicking here.
