ST. LOUIS COUNTY – Mehlville School District Superintendent Dr. Eric Knost has been granted a release from his contract.

Knost made a post on the Facebook page for the Mehlville School District Tuesday afternoon, stating he made the request after he was named a finalist to become superintendent for the Rockwood School District. He said the Mehlville School Board approved his request during a closed session Monday night with a vote of 7-0. His contract will end June 30, 2014.

He first came to the Mehlville School District in 2002 as principal of Oakville Senior High. He has served as superintendent since 2011.

"While I have never expressed an interest in leaving my current post, this opportunity brings a new challenge to my career as an educational leader. My twelve years in Mehlville have been some of the most rewarding years of my career. I'm proud of the students, staff, and the community, and I'm proud of the district's many accomplishments. I'm confident of a bright and promising future for Mehlville Schools and I am honored to have served as your Superintendent," Knost said in the statement.

Knost says the Rockwood School Board will confirm their decision Thursday at a regularly scheduled board meeting.

The Rockwood School District has not yet announced their choice for superintendent.
