A security officer was shot at the Wellston MetroLink station Thursday afternoon.

It happened around 2 p.m. Thursday.

St. Louis County police said the armed security officer was shot around 2 p.m. Thursday. He was checking tickets at a MetroLink station in Wellston when the shooting occurred. Mychael James Garrett II, 22, is accused of trying to get on the train without a ticket, and the security officer followed him.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said Garrett turned around and fired one shot at the officer from almost point-blank range.

Belmar said the 29-year-old guard was taken to the hospital for treatment. He suffered a through-and-through gunshot wound to the shoulder.

St. Louis County police said two of their officers were arriving at the station on a different train and heard the shooting. Witnesses told police were the suspect was headed, and the officers ran after him. Garrett was attempting to get into a car when the officers shot him a total of three times in the buttock. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, and Belmar said he was in critical condition.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to the scene.
