Two Missouri college campuses among prettiest in America, magazine says

ST. LOUIS — Two Missouri college campuses were recently named among the "prettiest college campuses in America," according to a magazine.

Architectural Digest, a monthly magazine, recently named Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Missouri in Columbia some of the "prettiest college campuses in America."

The magazine took into consideration both the architectural legacy and setting of campuses around the U.S. Sixty-four colleges made the list.

"These campuses feature stunning structures that make them well worth a tour, whether you’re a prospective student or past your college days," the magazine said.

WashU's 169-acre campus is located near the cultural center of St. Louis, according to its website. Museums, performance venues, entertainment, dining, Forest Park and history-rich neighborhoods surround the campus.

The university was originally located in downtown St. Louis but eventually moved to its current location. According to Architectural Digest, a design competition was held for the new campus, and "the firm Cope & Stewardson won with a project that drew inspiration from Oxford and Cambridge, in the UK."

One of the most iconic parts of the University of Missouri's campus is the six columns on the Francis Quadrangle. The columns are the only remaining part of the original Academic Hall, which burned down in 1892, according to the university's website.
