A St. Clair, Missouri, officer shot and killed a man with a knife who crawled out of a crashed car Saturday night, a press release from the department said.
According to a release from St. Clair Police Chief Michael Wirt, the deadly shooting happened at about 8:30 Saturday night along North Service Road in St. Clair. Police did not release the man's identity but said he was 28 years old.
The press release said a trooper with the Missouri State Highway Patrol saw a flipped vehicle off the side of the road near where the road makes a sharp turn and called for help from St. Clair police and EMS.
While checking the car, and officer from the St. Clair police department saw a man inside holding a knife. According to the release, the officer told the man to drop the knife multiple times, but the man did not.
The release said the man crawled out of the car and started walking toward the officer while still carrying the knife. The report did not say if the man was making threatening motions with the knife.
The officer started backing away while continuing to order the man to drop the knife. The release said the officer backed up as far as he could, and when the man continued to walk toward him, the officer shot the man.
The man received treatment at the scene and was rushed to the hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police identified the man Tuesday as 27-year-old Denis L. Redondo-Zelaya.
Police said Redondo-Zelaya had an identification from Honduras. The report did not say if he spoke English.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control is handling the investigation.
