Mom reacts to video of officer-involved shooting after son shot and killed in north city

"I want answers. Nobody has told me anything."

St. Louis police are trying to provide answers about an officer-involved shooting from last week.

Police released video of the deadly shooting of a north city man at a gas station on Friday, but the mother of 29-year-old Demario Bass said the tape doesn't have the whole story.

"This is so hard for me," Dionne Willis said.

More than a week since Bass’ death, Willis is still shaken.

"I have not seen him since that day," she said.

The day Bass lost his life. She said her afternoon last Wednesday started normally.

"I was getting ready to go to work so we both left here together," she said.

Willis said she and her son took separate cars and then headed south on Goodfellow, but when her son pulled into BP gas station at the intersection of Lillian and Goodfellow, he ran into some trouble.

"I looked I seen the police pull up on the gas station lot really fast," she said.

Police said the SUV Bass was driving had been reported stolen. Minutes later, he was dead.

"It was so hard. I've never saw something like that," Willis said.

On Friday, St. Louis police released surveillance video from the gas stations cameras. They said it showed Bass attempting to drive away with an officer holding on to the car. The officer fell to the ground and then shot Bass once in the torso, which killed him.

"Even if the car wasn't right they did not have to do that to him," Willis said.

Willis also claimed that something is missing from the video. She said police didn't show the beginning of the encounter between her son and the officer.

"They didn't show the part that I did see. That's not there." she said. “It didn’t solve anything. They didn’t show the whole video. They showed what they thought made them safe.”

She said the video has left her with more questions than answers.

"I want answers. Nobody has told me anything," she said.

Police said they recovered drugs from the car. However, they didn't locate a gun. The investigation is ongoing.

Funeral arrangements for Bass has been set for next Friday. Relatives have set up a GoFundMe to help the family with funeral expenses. Click here to donate.
