COLUMBIA, Ill. — A tow truck driver was struck and killed Wednesday morning in Monroe County, Illinois, a police spokesperson said.

The Monroe County Coroner's Office identified him as Wade Bivins, 57, of East Carondelet, Illinois.

The crash happened around 10:15 a.m. on Interstate Highway 255's southbound lanes near Columbia, a written statement from the Illinois State Police said.

Police said the Bivins responded to a broken-down vehicle in the area. While loading the vehicle onto his truck, he walked along the left side of his truck when he was struck by a car.

Bivins died at the scene.

The driver of the car remained on the scene of the crash.

ISP troopers were sent to the crash location to help. Authorities said I-255's southbound lanes were shut down, and traffic was routed to Illinois Route 3. THe highway reopened more than three hours later.
