MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Mo. -- The man accused of killing five people and leading police on a multi-state chase tried to kill himself, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
Officials say 40-year-old Pablo Serrano-Vitorino was released from suicide watch Wednesday afternoon and placed in general population. Thursday morning, prison workers discovered he'd tried to kill himself with a safety razor.
Serrano-Vitorino was arrested late Tuesday night after a day-long manhunt. He's been charged in the murders of four people in Kansas City, Kan. and one person in Montgomery County, Mo.
NewsChannel 5 On Your Side learned federal investigators botched a chance to arrest Serrano-Vitorino last year.
After attempting suicide, Serrano-Vitorino was taken to the hospital, where he is under guard and in stable condition.
