Neighbors worried about series of break-ins in Des Peres

"The police can only do so much. I feel neighbors can do a lot to help each other."

DESP PERES, Mo. – Police are warning Des Peres residents about a series of break-ins.

On January 17, a man broke a door open on Christine Avenue, and stole jewelry. Nobody was home at the time.

On January 22, a man broke into a home on Kendon Drive, thinking nobody was home. When he saw the homeowner, he ran away.

That same day, police said a man broke into another home on Bopp Road. An elderly man was home at the time, but did not notice. Fortunately, he wasn’t hurt.

Police said the break-ins may be related. In two instances, the man was spotted wearing a construction worker’s vest. He may have been driving a green pick-up.

Neighbors said it is a quiet neighborhood, and there is hardly any crime.

“We definitely need to have a meeting,” said Marge Sweeney, who has lived in the area more than 40 years. “Along the way, we had regular meetings, but haven’t in a while. So, it’s time for more neighborhood get-togethers.”

Another resident Cathy Hayden said the break-in has made her more aware of who is in the neighborhood.

“The police can only do so much. I feel neighbors can do a lot to help each other,” Hayden said.

Des Peres Police said the man is probably looking for small valuables that area easy to take and sell.
