North Broadway neighbors share safety concerns after 9-year-old boy got pinned between 2 cars

"I want the boy to know that we are praying for him, and I want the speeding drivers to just stop it," said neighbor, Rosemary Ray.

ST. LOUIS — Rosemary Ray says shortly before midnight Friday, her 42-year-old son hopped in her car, turned right onto North Broadway and in a flash, just feet away from their home the unimaginable happened.

"He said he didn't see anybody, but all of a sudden he saw a speeding car coming from the south," said Ray.

She says the driver slammed into the back of her car.

"Totally demolished the back end and the car kept going," said Ray.

She says it's a miracle her son survived the crash.

Her crushed Cadillac is now totaled.

"I'm very angry, but I'm so grateful that my son is still alive. It's very upsetting. This could have been somebody else's life," said Ray.

The hit-and-run happened just down the street from where 9-year-old Codi Walker was pinned between two cars on Sunday.

His mother tells 5 On Your Side her son, who remains on life support, has a twin brother and is a third grader.

"I do want him to know that we are praying for him," said Ray.

Ray says during the last five years, she's lived in Baden she's watched many drivers whiz by the posted 35-mile-and-hour speed limit sign.

"I am angry, but I am so grateful that my son is still alive. This is very upsetting because it happens every day and almost all day long and that's why I had concrete barricades put up outside my house to try to protect it," added Ray.

St. Louis police confirm speeding and crashes are a problem in the area.

Crashes where people have been hurt and property damaged.

Last September, a woman was killed in a multi-car crash on North Broadway, more than a mile away from Sunday's crash.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol's database, so far this year, on the entire stretch of North Broadway in the city, there have been at least 50 traffic incidents.

"We are all just sick of it. We are trying to see if we can get the police to just be stationary over here some mornings and evenings," said Gloria Gooden, the director of the neighborhood group, Revitalization of Baden.

"My message to the people who are consistently running the stop signs, breaking the law and putting lives in danger is just slow down. This has to go to stop!" said Ray.

Earlier Tuesday night, North Broadway neighbors had a chance to share their concerns with Mayor Tishaura Jones and Police Chief Robert Tracy during a two-hour-long, community town hall.
