ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — The man who was hospitalized after being shot by police Wednesday night in south St. Louis County has died, according to the St. Louis County Police Department.
Karl Schuhe, 59, was pronounced dead late Saturday night. The St. Louis County's Prosecuting Attorney's Office issued charges Thursday evening against Schuhe for attempted assault of a special victim in the first degree and armed criminal action.
The St. Louis County Police Department said the shooting happened in the 9100 block of Rambler Drive in Affton, Missouri. The incident occurred on the front porch of a home just after 7 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
Police said a police officer shot a man while responding to a domestic assault call. The man was intoxicated when he threatened to shoot police if they were sent to the address and refused to let the person who called 911 leave the home.
The department said that when officers arrived, the man was on the front porch of the home with a handgun in each of his hands. Officers told him to drop his guns "numerous times" and attempted to engage in conversation to de-escalate the situation. The man refused and raised a gun toward one of the officers. He and the police fired shots, but it was unclear who fired first.
Police said the man was struck by gunfire during the exchange. He was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. The two officers who were involved in the shooting were not injured.
According to the probable cause statement, a revolver and a semiautomatic pistol were recovered from Schuhe Wednesday night. The incident was caught on cell phone video and officer body cameras.
According to the St. Louis County Police Department, the officers involved were described as a 38-year-old with 3 1/2 years of law enforcement experience and a 29-year-old with 1 1/2 years of law enforcement experience.
