Officer treated for trouble breathing after traffic stop, St. Louis City police say

Police said the officer was possibly exposed to Fentanyl.

ST. LOUIS — An officer with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department was taken to a local hospital with trouble breathing Monday, police said. 

According to St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, a third district officer conducted a traffic stop near the area of South Broadway and President Street just before noon in south St. Louis' Marine Villa neighborhood.

During the stop, officials said the male officer was possibly exposed to fentanyl. Police didn't release any information on what led up to that moment but said the officer had trouble breathing.

He was taken to a local hospital. Limited details surrounding the incident are yet known. 

"Slow breathing or no breathing, drowsiness or unresponsiveness, and constricted or pinpoint pupils are the specific signs consistent with fentanyl intoxication." according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

St. Louis police did not share specific details of the officer's respiratory symptoms.
