Waiting their turn, speaking one after the other, friends of two children killed in their St. Charles home spoke about things no child should have to.

"I got off the Xbox with him and the last words I said to him were 'goodbye' and that's all I could ever say to him ever again because now he's gone," said a friend of Jonathan Kasten.

Sunday dozens of people came together at the William Harris Elementary school to remember a family of four gunned down Saturday.

" I just wanted to know why would a person do such a thing to such an innocent child," said another child speaking in front of the crowd.

The smallest victims 8-year-old Zoe and 10- year old Jonathon were remembered by their friends in chalk drawings on the ground and heartfelt pleas from their peers.

"I had class with Jon and he always makes jokes and he was a really nice person," said one of Jonathan's former classmates tearfully.

The oldest victims are their mother Kate Kasten and grandmother Jane Moeckel.

Police say Kate died at the hospital while Jane died shielding her grandchildren by barricading them in the basement.

"It was not something that would be unexpected," said Kate's father Frederick Moeckel when talking about Jane's actions.

He says one of the most shocking things about the shooting is the man police say pulled the trigger. He was Kate's boyfriend.

"I don't know how he's going to live with himself," said Moeckel.

Police identified the suspect as Richard Darren Emery, who went by Darren.

"Its hard not to say something bad about Darren but I can't because there was never an indication that something like this could happen," said Moeckel.

But at this candlelight gathering, the focus remained on the victims.

A tight-knit family who lost their father to cancer.

"And they get to be with their father again, there all sitting down and listening to some Elvis," said Kate's sister-in-law.

All listening to his hits, while echoing their favorite phrase... "Big love".

A family friend has set a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs.
