ALTON, Ill — For Week 5 of Tackle Hunger III for Operation Food Search, we go to the Metro-East for the Clash of the Catholics. It’s Alton Marquette versus Althoff!
Alton Marquette showed evidence of their food collection efforts, despite the fact that it’s a short week – there’s no school on Monday and Friday!
Students say they collected money to buy canned goods during lunch periods and allowed donated food items for admission to volleyball games.
Alton Marquette Senior Grace Stoverink said, “I know we posted a lot on the Instagrams and the Facebooks just to get as many canned goods as we possibly could.”
Jude Keller, another senior, said, “I saw on the local on our local news program they put on ‘Alton Marquette against Althoff - canned goods.’”
Meanwhile, at Althoff in Belleville, students Drake Mosley and Ben Vosse said Tackle Hunger reminders were all over the in-school announcements.
Plus, it’s part of their culture and curriculum.
Mosley said, “That's like a thing that we do at Althoff is we really talk about - do what you can, and help where you can help.”
Vosse said, “We have a lot of full of full bins. So, I think I'm very grateful that our student bodies came together to help.”
Operation Food Search collects and weighs those donations from each school, on Fridays. 5 On Your Side will have the results on Friday 10 p.m. Sports “5 On Your Sideline.”
Next week on Tackle Hunger III, it’s Triad vs. Mascoutah. Those two schools will collect donated food items for Operation Food Search and square off, Oct. 4.
The entire program is possible for Neighbors Credit Union. While food cannot be donated at the Friday night football games, donations are accepted at any area Neighbors Credit Union location.
