Francis Howell definitely wins in Week 7 of Tackle Hunger for Operation Food Search

The contest pits Francis Howell Central High School up against Francis Howell North.

ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. — Tackle Hunger Week 7 goes to St. Charles County for an “all Howell” contest – Francis Howell Central High School vs. Francis Howell North High School.

Mascot Victor the Viking took to the hallways of Central on Thursday to rally students and staff.

Operation Food Search officials said Tackle Hunger was one of their most successful food collection events last year.

While Tackle Hunger schools are not set up to accept food donations at the Friday night football games, anybody can drop off food donations at any area Neighbors Credit Union.

The Francis Howell Central student council created a competition among first-hour classes.

“We gave them all boxes and told them to put their donations in the boxes,” Central student Summer Suarez said. “Then, we reached out to like other clubs and activities and said, ‘If you want, the donations can be for service projects, or something.’ Also, the junior class is sort of running the Powder Puff game, and entry into game is one canned food item.”

Howell-North student organizers said they are glad to see their community working together for a cause larger than school.

Student Kayla Spoors said, “We have teachers announcing it to all their classes. We really were going to try to collect as much as we can for the community.”

Student Rachel Bruemmer said, “And advertise as much as possible. We posted stuff on Instagram. People were reposting that, especially through NHS.”

Operation Food Search collects and weighs those donations on Fridays throughout the high school football season. The results will be featured on 5 On Your Side's 10 p.m. Friday sports segment “5 On Your Sideline,” along with highlighting the football game.

On Oct. 18, Tackle Hunger pits Cardinal Ritter and De Smet up against each other. Those two schools will start filling Operation Food Search barrels on Monday, Oct. 14.
