The results are in for Week One of Tackle Hunger III

Operation Food Search officials said last year, Tackle Hunger was their most successful food collection effort.

ST. LOUIS — Operation Food Search officials have weighed the food donations for Week One of Tackle Hunger III, and the numbers are in.

  • Pattonville High School: 1,210 pounds
  • Fort Zumwalt-North High School: 353 pounds
  • Online Monetary Donations: $25.00

That means students and staff at two area high schools collected a total of 1,563 pounds worth of food. Operation Food Search officials say these donations are valued at $2,885.29 and they represent enough to help provide quality nutrition to 390 people for one day!

“We are thrilled to see the response to Tackle Hunger III and truly appreciate KSDK, Neighbors Credit Union and the participating schools,” said Kristen Wild, Operation Food Search President & CEO. “We’re grateful that our generous community and partners are helping us fight food insecurity in such an immediate way.”

Operation Food Search officials say each dollar donated provides four meals to someone in need. Each 1.2 pounds of food donated equals one meal, and each pound of food donated has a value of $1.75.

KSDK President and General Manager Alicia Elsner said, “We are humbled by the community's amazing generosity and equally inspired by our area high schools standing up for St. Louisans in need.”

“Love the creativity of the incentives for the students!” said Paula Anderson, Neighbors Credit Union Senior Vice President – Marketing, in talking about 5 On Your Side stories highlighted on “Today in St. Louis,” “Show Me St. Louis,” and the Friday 10 p.m. sports segment, “5 On Your Sideline.”

“Working side-by-side with our members, KSDK, and high schools throughout the metro area to bring nutrition and hope to our neighbors in need is so rewarding,” said Anderson.

Next week the focus shifts to the Metro-East, as two Illinois high schools, Breese Central and Mater Dei, square off in football and Tackle Hunger, on Sept. 6.
