St. Francis Borgia and St. Dominic square-off in Tackle Hunger to benefit Operation Food Search

In just over three days, students and staff at St. Dominic filled more than 22 barrels with donated food.

ST. LOUIS — This is only Week 3 of Tackle Hunger III, and already St. Louis-area high schools may have set a new high-water mark.

On the football field, St. Francis Borgia head football coach Dale Guildehaus needs three more victories to get to 300 career wins. Borgia goes up against St. Dominic of O’Fallon, Missouri, Friday night.

Students and staff at Borgia in Washington recruited help from the community to collect food for Operation Food Search, all week.

Football player Hayden Wolfe said, “In the morning and in the last period, we usually make an announcement over the P-A.”

“We got to pick it up a little bit,” said another player, Henry Zeitzmann, talking about their food collection drive, and not their football season. “We got barrels out front, and they're definitely getting a little full. But we definitely need to add to that.”

Meanwhile, you should see what they have done at St. Dominic. In just over three days, students and staff had filled more than 22 barrels.

They had to call Operation Food Search and order more collection containers–  twice! Administrators say the soccer team alone is responsible for more than 2,400 cans of green beans.

Student Isaac Branson said, “It’s good to be able to partner up with St. Francis Borgia, who is technically our rival, in sports. But, to able to team-up and show some partnership is very cool.”

Student Caroline Nance said staff members sent emails notifying community members about the food-collection effort.

"They were just bringing awareness to get the food here and it's just been super fun,” Nance said.

Operation Food Search will collect and weigh those donations from Borgia and Dominic Friday afternoon. 5 On Your Side will have the results Friday night on our 10 p.m. Sports segment, “5 On Your Sideline.”

Next week on Tackle Hunger, it’s Lincoln County vs. St. Charles County, with Timberland going up against Troy Buchanan. Those two schools will compete all week – collecting food for Operation Food Search – before they square off on Sept. 20.
