Tackle Hunger Oct. 4 features 3 schools collecting food for Operation Food Search

Triad and Mascoutah were selected as the match-up, and Roxana asked if they could contribute to the cause.

ST. LOUIS — Week 6 of Tackle Hunger III will result in a trifecta Friday!

Mascoutah, Triad, and Roxana high schools in Illinois are contributing to the cause of collecting canned goods and other non-perishable food items for Operation Food Search.

At Mascoutah, school officials held a pep rally a week before the football game. Athletic director Scott Battas thanked students for their participation and asked them to get fired up.

“Help us out with that,” Battas said to the student body through a microphone. “Let’s have a great week! Let’s have a great cause!”

At Triad, student Tristan Vanzandt said they utilized social media to make people aware of the Tackle Hunger food drive. Students are pleased with the effort and appreciate the help from the community they call home.

“We're getting a great response,” said Vanzandt. “Everyone's coming in and giving the students food to bring in. We can drop things off in the mornings and throughout the day.”

At Roxana, students made a special request to participate in the Tackle Hunger effort. Student Joe Newton explained that part of Roxana’s fall sports tradition is channeling some of that excitement into doing something good for the community.

Roxana student Jenna Pruett added, “At our past pep rallies, we’ve been really trying to make infographics to direct people and give an incentive for helping our community.”

Operation Food Search collects and weighs those donations on Friday. The results will be featured on the KSDK Friday 10 p.m. Sports segment “5 On Your Sideline,” highlighting the football game too.

Oct. 11, Tackle Hunger is “all Howell” – Francis Howell North and Francis Howell Central. Those two schools will start filling Operation Food Search barrels, Monday.
